Unblocking Adobe Reader in Safari

Adobe flash player plugin for mac blocked plug-in

The move to block outdated Flash Player plug-ins comes after Adobe released Flash Player version 14.0.0.145 to push a fix that removes a security vulnerability (CVE-2014-4671), which could be exploited by using a tool called Rosetta Flash.

Q.When I try to open a PDF on many sites with the Mac Safari browser, I get a message in the middle of the window that says, “Adobe Reader blocked for this site.” If I click the message, I get a box with a “Trust” button that usually lets me see the PDF, but it’s annoying to take extra steps. Is there a way around it?

A. If you are tired of trusting sites one by one, you can change your Safari settings to always allow PDF files to display in the browser window. However, you will see an Apple warning stating that Adobe Reader “does not support the highest level of security for Safari plug-ins.”

To change the setting anyway, open the browser and under the Safari menu, choose Preferences and click the Security tab. Click the “Manage Website Settings” button. Next, click Adobe Reader from the list on the left side of the Preferences box. In the bottom corner, change the pop-up menu next to “When visiting other websites” to the “Always Allow” option. The Security settings here also let you manage your trust in Adobe Reader on a site-by-site basis, which is usually safer over all.

Adobe’s Flash Player and Reader software have been frequent targets for malware distributors, and outdated versions of the software can pose security problems. Before you adjust your Safari settings, go to Adobe’s site and make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest versions of Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player.

Adding a Printer in Windows 8

Q.Will I have to get a new printer if I get a Windows 8.1 PC?

A. Microsoft’s site claims that “almost all of the peripherals (printers, cameras, keyboards, mice, etc.)” you are already using with your Windows PC should work with Windows 8.1. You can also search the Windows Compatibility Center page at www.microsoft.com/compatibility to see if your printer model is listed.

Depending on the printer, Windows 8.1 may already support it, or have an updated driver available through Windows Update. The printer manufacturer’s website should also have the latest driver software. Microsoft has more information for installing and using a printer with Windows 8.1 at windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/install-printer.

TIP OF THE WEEK: A well-stocked Twitter feed can be a great way to keep up with current events, but it may be hard to pick out the news buried among the posts by friends, celebrities and others who use the service to share their thoughts, photos and web links. To better organize matters, Twitter includes a “Lists” feature that lets you sort the feeds of specific users into customized groups around common interests or topics.

To get started with lists, log into your Twitter account on the web, click the gear icon in the toolbar and select Lists from the menu; you can also just go to twitter.com/lists when you are logged in. Click the Create List button and give it a name. You can also decide if you want to make the list private or publicly accessible to other Twitter users. Once you save the list, you can add people from your general Twitter feed to it by clicking the gear icon on their Twitter profile pages, choosing “Add or remove from lists” and choosing the name of the list you want to use.

To read your lists, click the Me icon on either the web page or Twitter app, and select Lists. Click or tap the name of the list to read all the posts from the people you have grouped there; the posts all still appear in your main Twitter feed as well. Twitter has a full guide to using Lists at bit.ly/1aFuE88.
